From time to time I am asked by prospective clients, and also existing clients, if they can review some testimonials from those who have been in my care. Some prospective clients have also asked me if they can check me out by speaking directly with existing clients about what it is that I offer. However, since 2003, HIPAA confidentiality mandates inhibit such contact between parties who do not give consent to such.
Despite the rising popularity of holistic medicine, it is still unusual these days to encounter a clinician, seasoned over 4 decades, who has developed some fluency and practice in the integrated health concerns of all 4 aspects of our being…body, mind, emotions, and spirit. It is also unusual to find a physician who will spend a few hours in a single consultation to adequately develop the patient’s story in this quaternary of our being, and render solid advice. And so, a prospective client might regard working with me with some degree of incredulity and skepticism, and perhaps some self-doubt.
Testimonials are good for those who write them out because they bring clarity, more commitment, and more self-affirming belief in our innate self-healing wisdom, which is always active in our lives. Testimonials should also be helpful and reaffirming for those who read them.
Testimonials are good for me if they help open doors of curiosity and exploration in the lives of those who may come to visit and be with me. A hidden secret of good physicianship is that the physician should gain as much from the healing encounter as the patient. This reciprocal dynamic is one dimension of the practice of medicine.
The following testimonials are given by patients from my past surgical practice as well as from my current holistic practice. Some have given their full name and some have used initials. There will be some shorter stories, and some longer ones.
This testimonial collection should serve to be reassuring at some level for those readers who are curious, and who may persist with a reading of the entire collection, which was created in 2015-16. This is a representative sampling from the many patients who I have been privileged to care for over the past 40 years.
Thank you for reading.
John is a healer of masterful ability and is a rare, if not totally unique, combination of a seasoned conventional physician and a holistic practitioner. As such, John is able to assist with healing and health challenges on many levels as well as collaborate with physicians of the conventional allopathic approaches. Often, as in my own healing journey, it is easy to focus on the most obvious physical concerns and look for help to relieve that issue. John is not only able to help with that level of challenge, but can also guide healing on a deeper level by aiming to correct imbalances on many levels, and usually at the root level of the issue.
So why should you care? Because John is the person who can help when you feel there are no other options, when you feel let down or not fully treated by your current doctor’s approach to your challenge…and also because you are finally ready to fully heal and not just treat symptoms anymore.

…Health Recovery and Rejuvenation after Multiple Surgical Events
I have known John Day most of my life but I never talked to him about my health until three years ago. When I started talking to John about my health I had just retired.
During my last six years at work I had four surgeries…one was on my back for an L4-L5 slipped disc, another was a prostatectomy for prostate cancer, and I had both hips replaced. I also have coronary and carotid arterial disease. I was a very unhealthy person when I started talking with John. After 3 years of following John’s advice I do spin class 2-3 days a week, walk my dog, and work out with weights twice a week. I am pain free. With John’s advice, as well as personalized supplement recommendations, I feel younger than I ever have. Thanks to John…and praise to God.

…Healing the Process of Ovarian Cancer in Body-Mind-Emotions-Spirit
In 2015 I was diagnosed with Stage IV Ovarian Cancer. At the time I was only 48 years old and presented no real symptoms of being sick. Needless to say it was quite a shock when I got this diagnosis. I am a lifetime athlete and I’ve always taken very good care of myself. I am also a licensed massage therapist for over 20 years. With all this knowledge behind me, I decided to do the best of Western and Holistic medicine to give me the best possible chance at survival.
I was placed on the best clinical trial in the country at CU Anschutz Cancer center in Denver. I also enlisted Dr. John Day to be on my healthcare team. This was the best decision I have ever made for myself.
What Dr. Day provided for me was a key factor in my full recovery and my current cancer free status. We worked together on many things including DNA testing, vitamin supplements, and biofeedback. But what was most profound for me was the mind-body connection to the disease itself. We worked a lot on the emotional-spiritual aspect of what I was going through. He gave me valuable tools and visual aids and exercises to do to come to terms with the reason why I was facing this illness. Because of this approach I honestly feel I have healed the root cause of this dis-ease.
Through my six rounds of chemo it was his counseling and vitamins and supplements that gave me the best possible outcome. I was able to handle the treatments very well and recovered quite quickly after my last treatment in October 2015.
Today I am living and thriving! My cancer markers have not moved in over 10 months. All my test results show that I’m healthier than probably 95% of the people out there today. I am back doing the activities that I love to do which are hiking, mountain biking and skiing. It hasn’t seemed to slow me down at all. For me Dr. Day was a bridge to the Western and holistic medical approaches and gave me a strong and informative safety net to navigate my way through this very scary time.
I owe my life to Dr. Day and I honestly have him to think for my remarkable recovery and for giving me a second chance at life. I will forever be grateful and humbled by what he has done for me. If you’re facing any kind of health challenge I highly recommend working with Dr. Day. His treatments and knowledge are ahead of their time. We are so lucky to have his vast knowledge and caring nature here in the San Luis Valley.

…Recovering Thyroid Health and Awakening to a Mind-Body Perspective of Health
I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid when I was 18. I’m now 22. As a teenage male I was in the least likely adult demographic for the condition and I was convinced that there was some other underlying cause, but my inquiries with local doctors were met with dismissal. I started researching alternative treatments on the internet with some success, but also encountered a multitude of conflicting information. Then I found Dr. Day through a family friend and began meeting with him over the phone, ultimately traveling from Tennessee to visit his practice in Colorado.
Based on various lab tests, Dr. Day taught me how to treat my condition with a diet and supplementation regimen that was designed specifically for my body. More importantly he helped me identify the emotional and psychological states that allowed my thyroid disorder to manifest itself. My ultimate goal when I began working with him was to safely wean off of my thyroid replacement medication completely. Though I’m not there yet, I’ve been able to partially reduce the medication levels and begin the process of retraining my body to produce the thyroid hormone on its own.
I highly recommend Dr. Day to anyone who is seeking genuine healing. He has a vast understanding of how the mind, body, and soul work as one complete system and there’s no one I trust more in the medical field.

…Navigating the Conventional Medical Industry
My friendship with John spans across almost 50 years since the days when we were roommates in college, back in the early 1970’s. It has been emotionally challenging for me to sit down and pen all of the issues he has assisted me with and walked me through during that period of time. However, I do want to mention a few of them because I think it will help others who may read this. I feel that John has helped me save my own life in a variety of ways. Here are some anecdotes which may serve to illustrate what I mean.
I underwent multiple surgical procedures in my late 50s which left me quite entombed for three years on a recliner in our den. As a result of these surgeries weight gain, lethargy, and depression crept into my life. An initial visit with John in Boulder, and subsequently in Crestone, began a patient-physician relationship that finally brought my life back to some normalcy. Lifestyle recommendations, food and supplement suggestions, new readings, and an expanded understanding of spirituality and faith contributed to my ability to raise myself from depths that I care not to ever visit again during this lifetime.
Six years ago I underwent a major back surgery, and I also had my left hip replaced. Subsequent to these life events a dermatologist removed a growth from my scalp and sent it to the lab for analysis. Initially, I was diagnosed by an oncologist with what he thought could be an adenocarcinoma. While visiting my daughter in Arizona, the oncologist called and expressed his concern that a cancer had metastasized from somewhere in my body onto the upper region of my scalp.
Filled with fear, I sent all of my medical records to John to get his professional opinion. In an ensuing phone call he stated that it wasn’t cancer at all, but was a large growth that could easily be removed by a simple excisional surgery. Ultimately, a surgeon decided to treat the benign growth as skin cancer, and removed it and lymph nodes in the back of my neck to check for spread of the supposed cancer cells. During a postoperative exam the surgeon admitted that in fact John Day was correct, and he wished he had not taken so much tissue from my head and from the back of my neck. I suffered from this overly excessive surgery for months, but I healed.
On another occasion, 2 years ago, I consulted with John when I started to experience severe cardiac arrhythmia. Admittedly, I was very confused by this development as I was exercising regularly, using sauna three times a week, and was being careful about my diet. My cardiologist sent me home with a monitor attached to my chest for 30 days. During that time, I called John and he suggested that I have some specialized blood tests run; some of which were outside the realm of normal lab testing. He read the results back within a week, that I was depleted in magnesium, potassium, zinc, and other intracellular nutrients. He recommended appropriate doses of the 3 minerals, plus some other key nutrients, and within a very short period of time I was completely alleviated of the arrhythmia and its symptoms. At the end of the 30 day monitoring, my cardiologist informed me that even though I was not showing any signs of the arrhythmia, he wished to put me on beta blockers for the rest of my life. When I informed him of the tests that John recommended, the ensuing results, and the addition of the aforementioned supplements, he replied “Well, that could be it”. However, he expressed no further curiosity, interest, or clinical inquiry.
In both of these circumstances John helped me save my life by allaying my fears as well as informing and guiding me regarding the excessive treatments used in the medical industry; treatments which could have permanently altered my life in a negative manner. If you are facing medical or surgical treatments and if you do not have a knowledgeable and informed advocate to assist you in navigating the medical industry and its rigid treatment protocols and perils, I recommend that you consult with John. He is a seasoned and deeply experienced physician who understands human pain and disease from a broad perspective. He also understands how the conventional medical industry works inside of its narrow view of human disease, and how to help you work with practitioners’ limited understanding and viewpoint. He understands how to assist you and help you activate your understanding and your experience of your own healing intelligence and power.

…Navigating Colon Cancer and Life after Colon Cancer
I met John Day in November 1999 with a golf ball sized cancerous tumor in my lower intestine. I was only 40 years old at the time, with two small children, and despite the difficulty of my diagnosis, he gave me hope that I would heal. Dr. Day performed surgery on me a week later and continued to care for me over the course of the next year as I did chemotherapy and regained my sense of well-being. In addition to recommending some key supplements to help me with chemotherapy, my blood chemistry, and my diagnosis, I also credit John with helping me embrace and endure the entire episode…medically, emotionally and spiritually.
I have since consulted with John on and off since I met him, and I continue to be amazed by his radical presence and insight. I have recommended him to many friends, and I have been thanked by them every time.

…a Spiritual Awakening after Colon Cancer
I met Dr. John Day in July, 1988, after entering the emergency room of Boulder Community Hospital with a complete blockage in my digestive tract. John was the chief surgeon, and within 24 hours he saved my life by removing a malignant tumor, along with two thirds of my colon. It was no laughing matter at the time, but today I can honestly say (as a writer as well as a former patient) that I really appreciate my semicolon. For the past 27 years my body has digested food and generally functioned better than ever before.
Still, my physical transformation has been no more life changing than the spiritual journey that I embarked on, again, thanks to John. I was agnostic at the time and didn’t believe in spirits or angels or, least of all, God… while John was one of those rare medical doctors who was deeply exploring spirituality. He introduced me to Siddha Yoga, which provides various means of opening the body-mind-spirit to the transformative powers of Shakti, the Hindu life force… similar to the Holy Spirit of the Christian faith.
From Siddha Yoga I branched out into various aspects of spiritual and afterlife research, especially ITC (instrumental transcommunication), which involves the use of technology to open advanced communication channels with the worlds of spirit.
John and I have followed each other’s work over the years, and I’ve always been inspired and encouraged by our frequent correspondence. His work in what he calls the quaternary approach to healing (body, mind, emotions, and spirit) coincides perfectly with the “contact field” in my work, which is formed by a resonance between the thoughts and feelings of us physical humans and our spirit friends at the other end of the communication bridge.
ITC bridges can be established (for my work), and human beings can find complete healing (in John’s work) when love, trust, empathy, and good will become the guiding forces within us.
Those forces all come together in the heart, which mystics for centuries have called the seat of the soul.
Mark Macy (1949-), Louisville, Colorado

…a Thank You Note
Thank you for taking a chunk out of your Saturday afternoon to talk with me about my health. You have the loveliest manner of telling me what I need to hear, and an enviable high powered grasp of the physiological, chemical, and emotional intricacies of that which you are trying to impart to me.
I especially like that you recognize how overwhelming some of the changes are at first, and that you gave me time to adjust to those changes. Then, after some time had passed, you seemed to instinctively know that I am ready for the next step, and that you can help guide me toward my next goal.
You also have a masterful grasp of the biologic complexities of gene SNPS, but presented the information to me in a manageable, digestible fashion.

…Whole Person Healing
I started consulting with John Day in December 2007, about chronic pain and chronic illness. He was the first doctor to make the connection to a previous head injury and introduced working with neurotransmitters and neurohormones to balance my biochemistry. I found John to be a kind and knowledgeable healer. In a world of busy, he takes the time to get to know his patient and to treat the patient as a whole person. John excels when your symptoms don’t fit the prescription mold that limits most doctors. He cares deeply about helping his patients heal their whole life and offers a range of resources for doing so.

…Natural Healing and Bio-identical Hormone Therapy
I prefer to keep my body healthy naturally. I have studied nutrition extensively, and I have grown much of my own food and herbs for seasoning and healing. I prefer rural living to fast paced urban life, even if it means I sacrifice income to live in a small town in a rural area. My approach to health is similar. I avoid chemicals in favor of natural remedies wherever possible.
When I approached menopause, I researched options for the menopause symptoms I was experiencing and tried wild yam cream and progesterone cream. I investigated the natural hormone replacement therapy that used progesterone with estrogens. Eventually I learned more about bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, but had a hard time finding a physician who was willing to work with me on developing the right therapy for me.
Finally I found John. I told him about my research and what I had been working with, and he immediately and willingly helped me work out a formula that included the bio-identical hormones that I most needed. For several years now he has helped me with any health issues or questions that I have. I trust his medical expertise as a surgeon, but really appreciate that he suggests alternatives that meet my criteria for a natural healing experience wherever possible. Thanks to him, I am now in my 70’s, and while other members of my family require multiple pharmaceuticals and doctor visits to maintain a modicum of health, I am able to continue working without taking sick days while using only two natural hormone prescriptions on an annual basis. Thank you Dr. John Day.

…Vegan Nutritional Support
After I reached the age of 50, a vegan most of my life and extremely active – I began to experience extreme fatigue and the negative impacts of high stress levels. I immediately started looking for a health practitioner to consult with outside the realm of allopathic medicine. John was the perfect choice in creating a partnership in facilitating lifestyle change and a personalized supplement regimen that has created optimal health for me. He takes the time to orient you to your own body and its physiology in a way that can be grasped if you don’t have a medical background.

…Generalized Life and Aging Concerns
I began seeing Dr. John Day in October 2003 in Boulder following surgery for a hernia. My surgeon, a former colleague of Dr. Day, recommended that I consult with him about some of my life and health concerns.
At that time I had a long term digestive problem which was becoming burdensome. I did not have a personal physician and had never had one as my health in general was very good. However, I was concerned with longevity and bothered by a family history of cancer. I needed advice concerning nutritional supplementation and hormone replacement, as well as help with the digestive issue. At that time I was also subject to considerable stress from stock market dynamics and related financial concerns. John was very helpful with these issues, and others that developed as I aged.
I saw him on a very regular basis until he left Boulder. I have continued to consult with him on a regular basis and hope to continue this for many years. He has been a great help to me with my health problems as I age, and of immense help to me in terms of his professional practice, but even more so in personal terms as I have had to face a number of daunting problems which eventually were resolved. My spirits are always uplifted when I talk to John, and always uplifted when I consider his advice and wise counsel. In Dr. Day you will find a very intelligent, very knowledgeable, very skilled, very thoughtful physician who will always be of help when needed.

…the Health Benefits of “Benign Neglect”
Here are my reflections on the difference that Dr. John Day’s practice of medicine and surgery has made in my life.
“Benign Neglect” is a phrase not commonly associated with conventional medical practice and good health. I learned the meaning of that phrase from John when, as a skilled surgeon, he saved the life of my son, Aaron. I have known John for over 25 years, but it was not until Aaron required serious medical attention that I fully appreciated Dr. Day as a gifted healer.
As a high school Junior, Aaron ruptured his appendix while on a school trip in a neighboring state where he underwent an emergency appendectomy. His post-operative recovery was not going as expected despite the medical attention that he was receiving. I asked John to see him for a second opinion, and he agreed that Aaron should be making better progress. He followed his clinical intuition and discovered that Aaron had a post operative infection from the ruptured appendix, and that he required immediate surgery for this life threatening condition.
During surgery, John recognized that the infection was worse than expected and it would require more than surgery for Aaron to survive. I will be forever grateful for his skilled surgery and the immediacy of his decision. However, that is not what saved Aaron’s life. “Benign Neglect” saved Aaron’s life.
“Benign Neglect” knows the limits of surgery and Western medicine. It is the knowledge of the body’s ability to heal itself given the right amount of conventional medical treatment, along with attention to inner positive energy and our natural healing intelligence. In the days after Aaron’s surgery, his recovery hung in the balance. We were desperate for a medical solution to boost the chances of his survival. John contemplated various medical/surgical procedures, but decided to treat Aaron with “benign neglect.” John encouraged us to face the fear of Aaron’s passing and surround him with a spirit of healing presence. He encouraged us to remove negativity and worry around Aaron. It worked. Aaron survived. He went on to be elected President of his Senior class. Today, Aaron is married and is a great father to two children, and I have the daily privilege of working with him as the Managing Partner of our family business.
Dr. John Day understands the delicate balance between medical treatment and holistic healing. We would all like to have the pain that we experience in life surgically removed, but John’s ability to practice “benign neglect” in his treatment plan while also enabling our innate healing ability is one of his great gifts. It saves lives.

…a Big Picture Account
My association with Dr. Day began about 12 years ago when a family member was originally referred to him by another medical practitioner. As an opponent of the prevailing over-medicated polypharmacy practiced by most mainstream physicians, I was immediately attracted to John Day’s powerful melding of a stellar surgical career, an encyclopedic medical mind, and his unique Haelan LifeStream model. This “body, mind, emotions, and spirit” approach is a better fit for my evolving beliefs about how the world and the body work (and are connected), and has proven essential for helping me manage my health and life toward my goal of graceful and healthy aging.
I have called upon John during periods of significant emotional stress where he has adroitly guided me through journeys of rediscovering my life’s primary motivators while helping me refocus on a healthier lifestyle and my own personal spiritual growth. When my body has required repair or strictly medical support, John is the first person I call for the best noninvasive and non-pharmaceutical medical advice. Yet, he has been the first to advise allopathic approaches and procedures when indicated and appropriate. I consider this ability to draw the best from both these worlds to be one of his greatest assets.
Once, when my wife experienced a life-threatening medical emergency (caused by a botched routine surgical procedure), John made himself constantly available by phone to educate, inform, and coach us through our interactions and communication with the hospital and surgical staff. Without his support, it would have been significantly more difficult for us to successfully manage this emergency with the least amount of physical and emotional trauma.
I have also watched John gently, yet forcefully, and with tender attention to his current emotional fragility, counsel and help guide a young adult through the challenging journey of recovery. John is a gifted communicator with the sensitivities and insights necessary to successfully communicate and reach patients, even when they seem overwhelmed by their current difficulties and circumstances.
John has recently been instrumental is guiding me (as well as other family members and friends) through the often complex and unfamiliar world of genetic analysis and nutrigenomics as we continue to search for ways to individualize and personalize our health and nutritional approaches. It is exciting territory and without John’s guidance would most likely be beyond our access at this time.
While most of my consultations and experiences with John have been through various forms of electronic communication, my wife and I have visited the beautiful and inspiring environs of Crestone, CO, and stayed at the Haelan LifeStream Center to take advantage of personal consultations with him. If you ever get the opportunity to work with John, I would highly recommend this one-on-one work at his Retreat.
It is with the highest level of confidence that I would recommend Dr. John Day to anyone who is interested in finding a contemporary medical professional with the experience, skills, education, and insight to help guide you through the exciting world of cutting-edge integrative medicine.

…a Better Life Journey
A session with Dr. John Day is a valuable experience. He truly helps one heal the whole self. He accepts the client position and commences with whatever the needed rebuilding process may entail…very successfully.
I started working on my problems with John when I lived in Colorado in 2004. At that time a complicated emotional trauma threatened my heart, my emotions, and my spirit. I now live in North Carolina, and I continue to consult with him regularly on a long tedious journey to a better place.
Regarding conventional medical issues, John has helped me understand my medical conditions, my medical reports, the chemistry of foods and drugs, and we have worked on genetic analysis. The genetic analysis work may prove to be lifesaving.
His counseling, always given with a loving heart, is pertinent and clear. He has also recommended certain book readings and these have also been of monumental help.
His work is thorough. His capabilities are numerous. He is well suited to the work he offers. He has helped to provide me with a life that is much more informed, worthwhile, and pleasant.

…Blending Bioenergetics and Science in a Life Healing Journey
Working with Dr. John Day has elevated and expanded my healing paradigm beyond any health work I’ve done over the past 30 years. Due to his recommendation that my husband and I participate in the DNA profile studies from 23andMe, our health awareness has shifted sharply upward.
I called him after a mutual friend recommended that we meet while I was living for the summer in Crestone, CO. For me, when I call a doctor and say, “I’m A1298C homozygous” and they don’t say…”whaaaat?”…then I know I’m where I’m supposed to be.
Dr. Day is brilliantly adept at understanding methylation and detoxification pathways and being able to articulate the science for his patients in a way that facilitates understanding. This is no small feat!
I feel my overall health and well being and my ability to manage it is more in my personal comfort zone after working with Dr. Day on the DNA testing results.
Dr. Day is one of those rare medical professionals who is a true healer, both from the bioenergetic and the conventional scientific standpoints. I believe one cannot be effective without the other. Knowledge is power!
Working with Dr. Day has put me more in charge of my own health and healing process from a scientific perspective, even as I am always firmly embraced by the Source Energy Field.
Dr. Day is a very conscious doctor and healer.

…Whole Family Health
John has been one of the primary healers in the lives of all three members of our family for the past 15 years. He has taken care of us through a number of challenging long term health crises, like cancer and diabetes, and he has guided us toward uncovering and addressing persistent obstacles to greater well being. John uses his intuition, compassion, and scientific insight to get to the core issues; including getting down to the genetic level. His approach integrates the best of western medicine, ancient wisdom, and cutting edge science like nutrigenomics. It was a revelation to find out what our genetic predispositions are, and better yet to put a nutritional program in place to shift how these genes express themselves. We know that John can help anyone who is open and interested in making a quantum leap in their health.

…Nutritional Support for Genetic Expression
I choose to write this letter in support of an exemplary practitioner who has assisted me and has also cared for several of the people I love the most.
John was introduced to me about 4 years ago by my husband who he had assisted and supported through some challenging life processes. I met John when we visited his Haelan LifeStream Retreat in Crestone, Colorado. We stayed there a few days as his guests, and I was able to see firsthand what John had not only created physically, as a beautiful, soulful space in the mountains of Colorado, but I also had an opportunity to meet him at a professional level by sharing some of my life and health history.
He has a very non judgmental, compassionate way about him. He listens with all of his being. He hears you in ways I had never been listened to before. He does not uproot or contradict other physicians’ ways of practice, such as pharmaceutical medications or diagnoses. Instead, he offers alternative ways of approaching these issues. He asks you about you, and wants to understand where you have created your ideas about you. He doesn’t make you or others wrong; he just simply asks you if you would like to do something different. His approach to healing is about all of you at the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.
When I met John I had been taking two antidepressant medications and a thyroid medication for about 15 years. I shared with him why I had started taking these meds and that I had attempted to stop unsuccessfully several times over those 15 years. He never made me feel bad about it. He simply asked me if I would like to try something different.
He helped me understand that there may be some very specific genetic mutations in my DNA which could explain my symptoms. By dealing with the root of the problem and altering it nutritionally, I could wean myself off of the pharmaceutical medications that were numbing me out and not treating the underlying biochemical issues.
We created a plan to begin using targeted nutritional supplements for the genetic deficiencies that had plagued me for the past 20 years, had altered my moods and sleep patterns, and caused emotional numbness. Not so long after starting my program, I began to notice that I was sleeping more soundly, waking up rested and replenished, and feeling more energetic during the day. I felt good emotionally for the first time in a long time. I felt genuine joy.
Now I understand the role which nutritional support plays in our genetic expression, and how this can positively change the negative outcome of many dis-ease states and lead to healthier outcomes, longer lives, and more graceful aging.
For years I was taking things I had heard about that were supposed to be “good” for me, but I never really understood why I was using these supplements. Now I understand why I am taking what I am taking because it assists a specific gene function, and is refurbishing what my body is deficient in. I feel amazing.
John has one of the most brilliant minds I have ever encountered. He hasn’t just created a fancy name for himself, nor does he spout off new age jargon. He is the real deal. He can back up his rationale, can create results, and is making a difference in people’s lives.
I believe in John’s approach as the way medicine should be practiced. It feels right because I am integrated into my own healing and wellness. I have become a proactive participant in my care. I am not just a patient who has no understanding or no say in the process. I am the one deciding what I choose to do to heal. John is a powerful guide, and is the conduit to assist my understanding. I feel supported and cared for on a whole new level.
…a Historical Perspective
John and I are the third generation of our families’ friendship. His parents were prominent doctors, and his own entry into the field was not unexpected. What has been unexpected is his mastery of an advanced form of healing which came from his own remarkable mind and through his study of the whole human being as seen in both the practice of Western Medicine and in understanding the older healing forms of Eastern cultures
He has always been an innovative thinker. As a simple example of his forward thinking nature, he was still a young surgeon when he began to ask his patients what their favorite music was, so that he could have it played during their surgery. The value of that is well known now, but it was considered most unusual in the 1980’s. A more recent example is John’s interest in the use of genetic testing to assist in determining optimal treatment plans for individual patients, including medication, diet, and exercise. This is an important new tool, just beginning to be understood and used, but is clearly a wave of the future.
As the field of medicine has grown exponentially, John has continued to study and learn and teach, using his knowledge of ancient wisdom and new discoveries. However his finest gift to those he counsels is surely his great heart, in which he always has room for anyone needing care.

…a Story of a Long Time Friendship
In August, 1954, I became the office nurse for Dr. Jane Day in Montgomery, Alabama. I had a lot to learn. The number one “learning” was my office duties. Number two, I learned that her home life was also always present, and that I might be required to have a hand in the household. The office and home shared the common denominator of my formidable and beloved employer, Jane Day.
I soon learned that her household consisted of a husband, an aunt, and three children. John was the third of 3 children. This story is about John, who was a 4 year old when I met him. I saw him for the first time in May, 1955. Richard, my husband, and I went to Auburn on an errand for Dr. Jane on a Saturday when the office was closed. When we returned from Auburn we went to the residence and delivered whatever we had obtained. As Dr. Jane came to the door she was accompanied by others in the family. I met the three children for the first time, and John caught my eye.
The daily connection of both home and office was always present. One amusing memory definitely stands out from those early days. Young John must have found something like a toy, which he wanted badly. It seems the family had tried to talk him out of this. He didn’t give up easily. He looked up, and with a persuasive effort he told his mother, “Well, it’s improved by Good Housekeeping!” As he saw it, it was not approved, but was improved.
Usually, as Dr. Jane walked into the office at 6:30 AM, she would look at me and ask, “Where do I start?” After the above occasion she stood in the hallway beaming and laughing as she told the Good Housekeeping story. We had a good chuckle, and then, as was her custom, she started seeing her early morning patients who had gathered from all over Alabama.
Another anecdotal memory happened when John was about 8 years old. The office was one street block over from the capitol building of Alabama. A governor was being inaugurated. John and his brother became entrepreneurs for this gubernatorial event. The office crew made coffee and hot chocolate. The boys sold this to the chilled crowds in attendance. All involved enjoyed the day.
As 1969 rolled around I was making preparations to move to the Mobile area. This was due to my husband’s railroad job. My fifteen years as office nurse came to an end. Over the ensuing years I saw Dr. Jane from time to time, but I did not see or hear from John for over 30 years. These were the years of his college, medical school, surgical residency training, and most of the years of his surgical practice. I retired from working as a nurse at the Mobile Infirmary, and Richard retired from CSX Railroad. We moved back to Goshen, Alabama, which was the area of our youth.
By some amazement, I had become an avid herb enthusiast, a professional herbalist, and a writer about my herbal passion. I was, and still am known as The Herb Lady. I still publish on a monthly basis under that pen name within Alabama. In the early 1990’s I was an herbal writer for the Montgomery Advertiser, and some other newspapers and periodicals. John learned of my herbal interests by learning of my book The Alabama Herb Gardener, and he decided to reconnect with me. One afternoon in the mid 1990’s I answered my doorbell and found John Day standing there. I was both shocked and elated. A new bond was formed, and this also included Richard. John and Richard had never known each other over all of these years, and they became good friends late in Richard’s life. We shared some very good times.
On one occasion John was to speak at Huntington College in Montgomery. I was invited. In my absence Richard answered the telephone when John called to ask if I would attend. Richard told him, “Yes John, even if she has to crawl, and she might have to. She has torn the cartilage in one knee.” I was in pain, but I was there. Another time a large crowd gathered at my church to hear John deliver a well received presentation on natural health.
On several visits John consulted with people at my house to give advice regarding their health, and the benefits of herbs and other more traditional natural treatments. All of these people, including myself, still sing his praises. One patient was a woman who had been married for some time with no indication that she would ever become pregnant. With John’s advice she conceived, and produced a healthy baby girl. This baby is now a healthy, happy seventeen year old.
The days in Goshen ended. After Richard’s death I moved back near Mobile to spend the rest of my life near my children. John and I don’t see each other like we used to. However, between the telephone and e-mailing we are still often in touch. Love and admiration continue.
